Wanyin Deng is a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Brett Finlay in the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). He received a B.Sc. in biology from Wuhan University (Hubei, China), an M.Sc. in plant genetic engineering from the Institute of Genetics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing, China), and a Ph.D. in microbiology in the laboratory of Dr. Eugene Nester from the University of Washington (Seattle, USA). His research has focused on the molecular mechanisms of type III and type IV protein secretion systems (T3SS and T4SS) in bacterial pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions using model plant and animal pathogens Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Citrobacter rodentium, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC).
Interesting facts: He enjoys reading, jogging, and hiking, and is a marathon finisher. He is a minimalist in life and strives to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible on earth.
